Freedom CNG was established in 2012 to provide Houston CNG fuel stations and infrastructure in the metropolitan area for high-volume fuel users such as local commercial fleets, municipalities and school districts. NOVUS Wood Group LP, a local wood recycling and products manufacturing company, began to investigate the viability of substitute transportation fuels in 2008.

NOVUS determined that it could effectively hedge against rising diesel fuel prices, improve local air quality and increase profitability by over 10% if it began to utilize American CNG as a transportation fuel.

The principals of NOVUS and a group of local investors, including Sweat Equity Partners, formed Freedom CNG Houston to develop fueling infrastructure for those interested in lowering fuel costs, playing a role in bettering the air quality in Texas, and reducing dependence on foreign oil. The first Freedom CNG fueling station was opened in Southeast Houston in August of 2012.
